I was driving around the bungalows and was shocked to see the condition of this month's "yard of the month." While it did appear to be mowed, the entire strip of grass next to the street was brown and dead from apparent lack of watering. Not watering one's complete yard is hardly something that should be rewarded or behavior that other homeowners should be encouraged to emulate.

What criteria are there? Is the standard really so low as to say if the person mows that’s enough?

Yard of the Month

I guess you are talking about our house since we are the yard of the month for August 2010. I think it was my wife's flowers and plants that won the award. I am not a big fan of lawn watering, and I especially don't like sprinker systems as they typically seem very wasteful. I've been around quite a few years and I think God's good earth always recovers just fine and a little dry weather and brown grass will recover the next good rain. It's the Yin and the Yang of life and seasons my friend. Peace. Mike.

Good taste evident in your yard and your post....

Kudos to Mike and his wife! I just had to drive by to see the shocking condition of the yard described in the first post. Someone must have 'Yard of the Month' envy. I had to laugh as I drove by and saw that probably 70% or more of the strip by the street was green and the remainder, although browining from the recent string of 100+ degree heat, was far from dead. The entire yard appeared neat, tidy, weed free, and well cared for. No doubt the flowers blooming in the beds, despite the recent sweltering heat, caught someone's eye. Someone was apparently impressed enough to take the time to nominate the yard, and another must have been equally impressed to select it from the nominations. Congratulations to you both!
