Recommended plants/trees?

I'd like to add some trees and other foliage to my landscape, but where to start?

Can I get some suggestions from the ARC about not only what types of plants will do well in this area, but also some that will go well with the "vibe" of the neighborhood?

I've seen a lot of oaks around (and plan on planting at least one), but what other types of trees will work well?

Austin Plant Guide

Here's a couple of links to City of Austin websites with some good info. (they put out a booklet form that I picked up at our "Earth Day" here at work, but I'm not sure where you can pick one up at). If you're not familiar with the area,  this side of IH35 is part of the "Blackland Prarie" and has a deep clay content. Clay doesn't drain well, so you will want to avoid plants sensitive to poor drainage or put some effort into amending the soil around your plantings by adding lots of sand and some organics. Whittlesey Landscaping supplies on IH 35 in Round Rock is an excellent source for soil amendments.

If you go to the first link below, go down to field near the bottom of the page titled "Naitive:" , click on "Blackland Prarie", and then click on the "Submit" button for  native plant to this area. But check out the other areas as well because many of them work well also.

Most of the Oaks you see around here are Live Oaks and are native to the area. They are evergreen , but will shed their leaves in spring while growing new foliage (but they don't drop and go dormant like a deciduous).
