New recycling changes

Beginning in October, our recycling pickup will change. You should have received a new recycling bin with a flyer attached that tells you what your new recycling pickup day is. Not only is the pickup day changing for everybody, but we can now recycle more items!

In related news, the City of Austin started a test program several months ago for recycling plastic bags. This program has now ended and they have collected the blue buckets that were given out at the beginning of the test. Hopefully the program was enough of a success that they'll add it to the regular recycling pickup, but we haven't heard anything yet.

For more information on these changes, click on the Read More link below or visit the City of Austin Solid Waste Services website at http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/sws/default.htm. You can also call them at 974-1945 or by dialing 3-1-1.

Recycling will be collected every other week on your collection day (for your particular day, see the door flyer that was delivered to you). No sorting required, all recyclables go in the cart. Please place your recycling cart at the curb by 6:30a.m. and allow 5 feet of space between the recycling cart and trash cart or other structures such as your mailbox.

We can now recycle the following items:

  • Aluminum and metal cans: Food cans (labels left on OK), soda cans, aerosol cans.
  • Glass: Jars and bottles.
  • Paper: Newspaper, magazines, office paper (plain or color paper, envelopes, stationery, sticky notes), junk mail (inserts, magazines, catalogs, ad circulars, etc), magazines and boxboard (cereal and soft drink boxes), corrugated cardboard.
  • Rigid plastics: #1 through #7, including yogurt and margarine tubs.

We can NOT recycle these items:

  • Garbage
  • Pizza boxes
  • Plastic bags
  • Food
  • Yard trimmings
  • Styrofoam (cups, egg cartons, take-out containers, packing materials)
  • Broken glass
  • Window glass

Please Note:
Your recyclables should be rinsed of food residue. Do not use plastic bags to bundle any of your recycling. Please separate all of your paper products from the rest of the recyclables by placing them in a paper bag. All paper put into the cart must be dry. Please crush aluminum cans and flatten boxboard and cardboard to conserve space. If you have more cardboard than will easily fit inside the recycling cart, flatten it into bundles 2 ft. x 2 ft., tie with string or twine, and place next to the recycling cart.

The following calendar shows the recycling collection weeks (highlighted in yellow) for the coming year (please see your door flyer or call the City of Austin Solid Waste Services for your particular pick-up day):
